The BUFF’s Milestone 70th Anniversary
In 2025, Air Force Global Strike Command celebrated a remarkable milestone for one of America’s most legendary strategic bombers—the B-52 Stratofortress, affectionately known as the BUFF. This iconic aircraft reached its 70th anniversary of operational service, cementing its unprecedented place in both aviation history and the future of U.S. Air Force long-range strike capabilities.

While the aircraft’s maiden flight occurred on April 15, 1952, the AFGSC History Office documented that June 29, 2025, represented the 70th anniversary of the first operational Strategic Air Command (SAC) B-52 Stratofortress delivery to the 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle Air Force Base, California.
The developmental timeline showed the B-52A conducted its first flight in 1954, with the B model beginning operational service in 1955. Before departing Boeing’s Moses Lake testing facility at Larson AFB, Washington, the inaugural B-52 completed a seven-hour training mission before its delivery to Castle AFB, officially beginning its operational legacy.
Although AFGSC had not yet been established in 1955, the fundamental principles that would later define the command—strategic deterrence, long-range strike capability, and bomber readiness—originated during this pivotal era. The B-52’s initial assignment to SAC established the foundation for the bomber force that AFGSC continued to develop and command.
Throughout seven decades of service, the B-52 stood as an enduring symbol of American airpower. With its distinctive silhouette and dual-capable design, the Stratofortress served as both a visible and credible strategic deterrent for the United States and its allies worldwide.

The B-52H Legacy
Strategic Air Command received the first of 102 B-52H aircraft in May 1961. The H model possessed the capability to carry up to 20 air-launched cruise missiles and could deploy conventional cruise missiles that were employed in multiple military operations.
The aircraft demonstrated its remarkable flexibility during Operation Desert Storm and later during Operation Allied Force. B-52s successfully engaged wide-area troop concentrations, fixed installations, and bunkers while significantly undermining the morale of Iraq’s Republican Guard forces. On September 2-3, 1996, two B-52Hs struck Baghdad power stations and communications facilities using 13 AGM-86C Conventional Air-Launched Cruise Missiles (CALCMs) as part of Operation Desert Strike. This mission established a record for the longest combat mission distance at that time, involving a 34-hour, 16,000-statute-mile round trip from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
During Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, the B-52 proved instrumental in mission success by providing extended loitering capability high above battlefields and delivering close air support through precision-guided munitions. The aircraft also played a crucial role in Operation Iraqi Freedom, launching approximately 100 CALCMs during a nighttime mission on March 21, 2003.
In 2016, the B-52 returned to the Central Command area of responsibility for the first time in a decade. B-52s flew approximately 1,800 combat sorties against ISIS forces in Syria and Iraq, significantly contributing to the organization’s regional decline.

Engineering Excellence and Longevity
The B-52H model is active today, with its extraordinary longevity serving as testimony to both the airframe’s robust original design and the Air Force’s sustained investment in modernization. Airmen from active-duty and reserve components continued training, deploying, and maintaining deterrence with the aircraft.
In conventional warfare scenarios, the B-52 could perform multiple mission types, including strategic attack, close-air support, air interdiction, offensive counter-air operations, and maritime missions.
The aircraft featured advanced targeting pods that provided enhanced long-range target detection, identification, and continuous stabilized surveillance capabilities for all mission types, including close air support of ground forces. The sophisticated targeting and image processing technology substantially increased the B-52’s combat effectiveness during day, night, and adverse weather conditions when engaging ground targets with various standoff weapons, including laser-guided bombs, conventional ordnance, and GPS-guided munitions.
Through aerial refueling capabilities, the B-52’s operational range was limited only by aircrew endurance, with an unrefueled combat range exceeding 8,800 miles (14,080 kilometers).
Evolution from B-52H to B-52J
“Since its creation, the B-52 has anchored strategic deterrence for the nation,” stated Major General Jason Armagost, Eighth Air Force and Joint Global Strike Operations Center commander. “As we celebrated 70 years of the BUFF, we looked toward the next model to serve as the physical embodiment of peace through strength and carry us into the 2050s.”
The “J-model” represented the next evolutionary step for the B-52, incorporating multiple significant upgrades, including new engines, advanced radar systems, and weapons modernization.
The Commercial Engine Replacement Program replaced the existing B-52 engines (TF33) with new commercial engines (Rolls Royce F130). The Radar Modernization Program enhanced the reliability of radar systems used for navigation, weather avoidance, and air refueling operations.
The new Long-Range Standoff (LRSO) missile was designed to replace the aging air-launched cruise missile, providing credible air-delivered nuclear deterrent capabilities in an increasingly complex global security environment.
These comprehensive modernization efforts marked the transition from B-52H to B-52J, ensuring the fleet’s operational viability for decades to come.
An Enduring Legacy
As the BUFF entered its eighth decade of service in 2025, it did so not as an aging relic but as a continuously evolved and modernized warfighter. From its first flight in 1952 to its operational debut in 1955 and its continued service in contemporary military operations, the B-52 Stratofortress proved that some legends transcend time—they simply grow stronger and more capable with each passing decade.
